„The soul is in the body
like the sap in the tree“
Virgo embodies the quality of a priestess, a healer who serves a divine purpose when she filters, organizes and selects. In doing so we can receive a purer form of energy and remembrance and see more clearly.
In my early thirties I learned that the essence of Virgo is very present in my chart – as my ascendant, close to Pallas Athena and my Sun.
Learning and discipline are also what Virgo asks of you, to nourish and treat your body as a temple in a loving yet nuanced way.
Perfectionism, her shadow, still creeps in from time to time. I have to remind myself of the narrowing impact it can have on us as a channel and vessel.
The Hermit has always been one of my favorite cards in the Tarot. For many years he appeared regularly to remind me of the secrets that can only be unlocked in solitude, in deep silence and through spirituality.
In deep gratitude I embrace the quality of holding space for beings, becoming the vessel and channel through which they can feel remembrance and the love their own essence emits. What a gift.
I love Virgo season as it leads the way toward my birthday and the beginning of autumn – a time of harvest, the gentle melancholy of summer, and of organizing and planning for the darker half of the year.
In this Virgo season I wish for you to practice structure, routine and contemplation so that you can nourish your inner light and keep it bright and warm. Feel into the image of the Hermit and his lantern as your essence, guiding you home.
As the final sign of summer the zodiac sign Virgo (August 23 – September 22) meets us, embodying far more than the image of a woman reduced to her sexual maturity. Originally Virgo represents a person who stands in independence, clarity and inner strength. She is free and unbound by external influences and social entanglements.
Virgo season falls in the time of the first harvest festivals, in late summer and around Mabon many cultures celebrate the balance of day and night. It is the moment when we gather the fruits of our labor and give thanks for what has grown, both outwardly and inwardly. This quality of time reminds us to pause, to sort, and to store up supplies, not only for the winter but also as an inner foundation for new paths.
The Virgo archetype is often associated with the goddesses Artemis, Athena and Vesta, who choose independence of their own free will and remain untamed like a force of nature. They embody hunting and warfare, intellectual gifts, strategy and virtue – qualities that are expressed independently of male influence.
We also find her in the Greek mythology of Persephone and her mother, the harvest goddess Demeter. This story teaches that cycles of abundance and retreat shaped life on earth, that the power of the sun is finite.
She teaches us that there is a time to sow, a time to reap and a time to rest, an eternal circle of devotion and release. She stands at the threshold between light and darkness, between expansion and retreat, and reminds us that every inner clarity is also nourishment for the community.
Virgo is considered the healer of the zodiac, as she connects through introspection with knowledge that serves both herself and the collective.
The Hermit Tarot Meaning – Card of the Year 2025
The Hermit Tarot card reflects many qualities of Virgo. Even though he is most often depicted as male, what connects him to Virgo is above all independence and self determination. While solitude in the Hermit is seen as a conscious choice, it is still often considered “tragic” in Virgo.
In truth, voluntary retreat is a powerful act of self empowerment. It allows one to cultivate the inner light in stillness and detachment from external expectations.
The year 2025 carries in numerology the number 9 – the number of the Hermit. It stands for sacredness, threshold and transition into a new cycle and feminine goddess qualities. It is time to integrate what has been learned before we begin again. When the Hermit appears to you, it is worth pausing and asking:
How do I feel my inner light, how do I trust its guidance?
Historical and Spiritual Roots of the Hermit Archetype
Historically hermit women were often nuns, monks, medicine women or völva who placed themselves in service to the community through retreat and spiritual practice. In this inner work clarity, spiritual depth and orientation arise, also serving as a lighthouse for others. In myths we often find these figures at threshold places, between worlds, between cycles, between the old and the new. This heritage reminds us that inner retreat is not an end in itself, but a gift to the collective

Imagine carrying the lantern of the Hermit in your hand. Its light does not illuminate everything at once, but only the next step. Yet that glow is enough to keep you steady on your path – back to your essence, to your inner home.
